Girl Power USA’s Promise of a Better Future

Overview:

  • Meet Joy, a bright child who had to miss three years of secondary school due to financial struggles.
  • She, alongside her sister, live with their grandmother where they earn about $1 and $3 a week depending on demand.
  • Through the Enabled to Enable scholarship funded by Girl Power USA, Joy’s younger sister’s education is secured.
  • This has helped lessen her grandmother’s financial burden and allowed her to pay for Joy’s fees to continue secondary education.

Joy lives with her elderly grandmother, who never had the opportunity to receive a formal education. Alongside her younger sister, Joy helps her grandmother by selling waterleaf, earning between $1 and $3 a week depending on demand and availability. They struggle to afford necessities, including food and rent for their small room, which has only an old mattress, no electricity, and no other furnishings.

Girl Power USA: A Ray of Hope

Joy has already missed three years of secondary school because her grandmother could not afford the examination fees for her final primary school exams. However, Joy’s circumstances improved when her younger sister was enrolled in Enabled to Enable Smile of a Child Project—a scholarship program for orphans and vulnerable children funded by Girl Power USA.

With her sister’s school fees and supplies covered by Girl Power USA, Joy’s grandmother could pay Joy’s examination fees, allowing her to gain admission into secondary school. Years of exposure to sunlight while hawking waterleaf and reading under poor lighting have resulted in Joy developing glaucoma. She requires prescription glasses to read and see properly, especially in bright light.

Stepping Nearer to Dreams

Joy dreams of becoming a medical doctor and is working hard to achieve this goal. On July 26th, she completed her first year of secondary school, consistently ranking second in a class of over 60 students for three terms. She aspires to be the first person in her family to earn a university degree.

Thanks to Girl Power USA’s support and her involvement with Enabled to Enable, Joy has moved from the growing list of over 10,000 girls in Nigeria who do not attend school. We are proud of her achievements and believe in her intelligence and determination to fulfill her dream of becoming a doctor.
